Scenting with Intention: How to Design an Atmosphere

Scenting with Intention: How to Design an Atmosphere

When I first started to think about the essence of home fragrance, I realized it was about much more than just a pleasant smell. It was about crafting an experience. At LEHMANN DESIGN HAUS, I believe that a fragrance is a form of design, a sculptural element that shapes the very atmosphere of a space. But how do you use scent as a tool for design? It starts with intention.

The Psychology of Scent and Space

Each room in your home serves a different purpose, and its fragrance should reflect that. Think of scent as an invisible piece of furniture—it changes the mood, defines the purpose, and completes the design of a space.

  • The Living Room: This is a space for gathering and relaxation. I suggest a warm, inviting, and sophisticated scent like our Signature Candles. Notes of amber or musk create a comforting and intimate atmosphere for conversation.

  • The Bedroom: A sanctuary for rest and calm. This space calls for fragrances that are serene and tranquil. Look for scents with notes of lavender, sandalwood, or chamomile to create a peaceful retreat.

  • The Workspace: A place for focus and clarity. Here, I turn to invigorating and crisp fragrances. Citrus notes like grapefruit or verbena, or the clean scent of fresh greens, can help to sharpen the mind and increase productivity.

  • The Bathroom: A clean and refreshing space. Choose fragrances that are bright and uplifting, such as a crisp linen or a light floral. This helps to create a spa-like and rejuvenating feel.

Building Layers, Not Overpowering

Just as you would layer textures and colors in interior design, you can layer fragrances to build a more complex ambiance. However, the key is to avoid overpowering the room. I recommend using one or two complementary scents in adjacent rooms, allowing them to subtly merge. For example, a crisp scent in an entryway that leads to a warmer scent in the living room creates a welcoming journey.

The ultimate goal of intentional scenting is to create an environment that feels uniquely yours. A space that is not only beautiful to see but a pleasure to be in.
